ICE CHURCH is a weekly gathering facilitated by Justin Weiss, a former early American student of Wim Hof (and Certified Instructor) 2017-2023. The weekly sessions have occurred since November 2019, and provides a container to practice the combination of an effective breathing exercise and cold exposure within a safe & controlled environment.

The session is typically 2-3 hours, and is not focused on any certain intention besides practicing breathwork and ice baths. Justin teaches the breathwork portion, and ‘holds the space’ while giving cues for the technique. Then, ice baths are taken 1-2 people at a time, with full coaching by Justin.

The payment is sliding scale ($20-$60 per participant if purchased here, or $15-$50 per participant if Venmo/CashApp/Cash). It is trusted that you’ll pay what you can for each session. One volunteer registration per session is permitted for assistance in set up / clean up in exchange for the session.

Please bring: a yoga mat, towel, warm clothes/layers/blanket, and a robe if you have one!

At ICE CHURCH, Justin seldom covers the benefits or science of these practices. It’s an inclusive space for anyone to explore this practice in whatever capacity they feel called. Some may be looking for remediation of issues, while others may treat it like a contemplative/spiritual space or simply optimizing their humanness! It’s an eclectic group with people from all walks of life.

While the sessions are more oriented toward beginners, many seasoned practitioners join simply to have the camaraderie and accountability for practicing breathwork & cold exposure. It is meant to be an accessible option for safely practicing these techniques.

BREATHWORK

Wim Hof breathwork is a scientifically validated primer for cold exposure. While other breathwork modalities are used for engaging non-ordinary states, that is not the approach we take at ICE CHURCH. Feelings such as tingles, clenching, emotion, flashing lights, ringing ears, light-headedness, and tremors may still come up. Some may not experience any shifted state at all, which is not indicative of doing it correctly!

The breathwork portion is not for any therapeutic or non-ordinary state exploration. Therefore, the group is not a space for exploring deep states (unless one feels proficient in doing so), and attendees are taught how to remain in full control. It is possible to reap the benefits of this breathwork without instigating any sort of shift in feeling. While Justin has academic & extra-curricular training in harm reduction, somatic psychology, and is trauma-informed, he is not a therapist or doctor.

ICE BATHS

The ice baths at ICE CHURCH are cold! But every participant is coached through regulating their response to the cold, and closely watched to ensure that adverse effects likely won’t be an issue. Many find that they wind up feeling quite warm in the ice bath, once they let go. Techniques to quickly warm up are taught at every session.

Cold exposure holds inherent risk if not practiced properly, so you will be taught how to safely practice and minimize any inherent detriment in your own practice.
